This page is a work-in-progess to help PEEPs and EEPsters locate summer internship and camp/educational possibilities in the Los Angeles area. This list is not complete; PEEPs are requested to help add to this list. Parents and students may be interested in the March 2008 WSJ article on college interneships.
Students interested in paid internship possibilities should be sure to attend CSULA's biannual Career Fair (e.g., the Fall Career Fair held on Tuesday, October 30, 2007, 10am-2pm, Main Walkway; the Spring Career Fair will be held in mid-April). These Fairs have recruiters from over 100 companies and agencies, who hire CSULA students for full-time, part-time and internship positions. Students may call the Career Development Center at (323) 343-3237 for more information; internships information available at (323) 343-3283. The contact person at the career center is PEEP Joanna Martel (of alum Cynthia Martel-class of 1989)!
CSULA Career Development Center has a suggested schedule for Undergraduates, and a two-page summary of services available (p.1, p.2). Students should also pursue several avenues simultaneously to obtain desired internships:
1. Attend one of the biannual CSULA Career Fairs, to network and pass out your resumé (October/April; check out the CSULA calendar for future dates) -- also see the list of list of Fall 2007 companies attending.
2. Visit the CSULA career center to explore their internship binders (in Student Affairs) and speak to the Internship Coordinator (Mon-Thurs, 8am-6pm)
3. Attend one of the Career Center's other helpful events (see calendar)
• career counseling
• resumé help
• interview help
• how to choose a major
• networking events
• open houses and workshops
• OCI (On-Campus Interview) Program (Fall and Spring Quarters); call (323) 343-3276
4. Post a resumé/seek jobs on Monster.com to search for opportunities -- click here for instructions on registering
5. Search on the internet for possible internships (your own searches in the fields of interest, and some places to get you started, below). If you'd like an internship with a particular company, find the company's home page and see if internships are offered.
6. Seek out personal contacts -- ask your parents' friends or associates about possibilities.
7. Try searching Los Angeles Area Newspapers with Online Classified Ads for the terms "summer," "internship," "part time," "after school."

State: www.spb.ca.gov/employment
County: http://hr.co.la.ca.us
City: www.lacity.org/lacity62.htm
When applying for an internship, experienced persons in various city departments and elected offices had the following information and suggestions:
1. Write a letter of inquiry to the elected official and/or governmental agency. Contact information can be found on their respective websites. Inquiry and follow-ups have to be from the student not the parent.
2. Tell a little about yourself -- state your major, experience, skills, include a resumé
3. If possible, describe your knowledge and interests in that elected office and/or governmental agency -- why them?
4. Commitment -- most want a minimum of 20-30 hours per week.
5. Request an opportunity to interview.
6. At the interview, express your interests and expectations of what you would like to get out of the internship experience. Don't be afraid to inquire as to supervision and project assignments. There are always some gopher duties, but that should not be the primary function. Promote your abilities, skills, and experiences.
Some other internship possibilities, in America (including some options in LA) and around the world:

Don't underestimate the value to your child's resumé of volunteer positions, especially those in the fields of interest/study. Volunteer jobs display your EEPster's passion and dedication! In election years, there are many volunteer opportunities in either party too. It is possible to find a place close to home or to school by just visiting and offering to work for free! Also volunteer help is available online at Volunteer Centers of California an excellent site to explore for volunteer opportunities close to home. Enter your ZIP code for local listings or search for "Great for Kids" or "Great for Teens" entries.
